When should we start taking lessons?
The more time you leave yourselves to learn and practice the better.
If you can come to some of our dance classes at Street Latin Mackay or DanceFactor about 6 months before your wedding. Try some of the dances to decide which is best for you.
Allow at least 2 or 3 months before your wedding so you have enough time to learn the dance and then have enough time to practice.
That will leave the last weeks before the wedding free for all those other things and perhaps one last lesson in the week before for a final lesson to polish things off before your big day .
What dance should we choose?
Most people think that they should do a waltz, however most songs chosen for wedding dances are not waltz timing.
Most couples have that special song and it is likely that a dance such as Rhumba or Cha Cha Cha will be appropriate.
If you want something different like Tango, Foxtrot or traditional Waltz we can accommodate that too but it may take more time.
In short - it is up to you but the more complex the dance you choose the more lessons you will require to obtain the polished performance you need.
What music should we use?
A song that has a special meaning to you is the best one to choose. We can choreograph a dance to suit your music and your style. If necessary we may need to find a more suitable version of your song and we can help you with that.
We have developed dances for nearly every sort of music you can think of from Magical Mystery Tour to Indian traditional music... and we can do it for you too but it will take more time if you choose this type of music.
How many lessons do we need?
A minimum of five lessons is recommended to master a basic, polished wedding dance.
This allows for choreography in the first lesson, practice and fine tuning in the second lesson. In the third and forth lessons you can become more confident with your wedding dance.
This allows you an opportunity to practice together for a couple of weeks and to then have a final lesson in the week before the wedding to apply that final polish and get that confidence to pull it off in style on the day.
It is possible to achieve this in as little as three lessons if you are short of time but it is not recommended.
What happens if the groom is reluctant to take lessons?
Diane is able to give even the most reluctant groom the confidence to succeed on the day. She is skilled in putting the groom at ease and teaching him steps that he can master with confidence and really impress.
Consider - a bit of nervousness 3 months before the wedding with an understanding teacher is far better than the terror that arises when the MC announces that you are about to do your dance and neither of you has any idea about what you are going to do!
What do I do if I have left it too the last minute?
First don't hesitate any longer call us straight away! We can put together a dance that will save the day and still impress. So once again call us NOW.
What should I wear to lessons?
We recommend that the bride wears heels of approximately the same height as the shoes she will wear on the day. The groom should wear smooth sole shoes similar to his wedding shoes. This will allow you both to get accustomed to moving smoothly. The brides should ensure that during at least one or more of their lessons they wear a long skirt. It makes a big difference to how the man moves in the dance and means there isn't any awful accidental stepping on the dress on the day.
Both must wear shoes and if possible shoes that are similar to the shoes to be worn on the day.
Where are the lessons?
We have a number of different venues we can vary the place to best accommodate your needs.
Lessons will be at the studio at 25 Valley Street North Mackay unless specified otherwise.
Can you still fit us in if one or both of us work at the mines or on shift work?
Yes we can. We are able to offer lessons in daytime and evening on both week days and weekends and can accommodate your needs.
